Japan is growing as a popular surf destination as stories of uncrowned waves and island paradises leak out around the world. As an island nation, swells wrap around the coastline from top to bottom giving the enthusiastic surf hunter boundless opportunities to seek out some great waves.

Although young in years, Japan’s surfing history is colorful and is heavily influenced by Hawaiian and Californian surf cultures. In the 60s a handful of Japanese were coming back from Hawaii and West coast USA with a new found love for surfing. In 1965, the National Surfing Association (NSA) was formed to encourage surfing as a sport and pastime in Japan, and as a result surfing’s popularity in Japan began to bloom. The NSA has grown substantially and is now recognized as the country’s amateur surf contest body. …
