The Echigo Yuzawa Hot Spring can be found in Yuzawa-machi of Niigata Prefecture, a popular ski resort town.
This area became well known after Yasunari Kawabata, a Nobel Prize recipient, wrote about it in his masterpiece, "Snow Country." It is said that the hot spring works for neuralgia and relieves fatigue as well.
Although it used to be a quiet therapeutic bathing place exclusively opened to the Yumoto Onsen area only, it developed into a modern resort where large inns and hotels currently can be found standing next to each other.
Along with such lodging facilities, it also offers a variety of public bathhouses and bathing facilities. It is also a place where many skiers come to and the many sake breweries nearby allow visitors to enjoy this traditional Japanese rice wine. Indeed, this hot spring resort is visited by 1.2 million tourists every year.
