The second largest city in the prefecture, Nagaoka prospered as a castle town of the Nagaoka domain during the Edo era. It is situated in a beautiful natural environment with the Shinano River running through its central part. It is also close to the Sea of Japan with its beautiful sunset and Yukyuzan Park which is a major cherry blossom viewing spot. The "Nagaoka Hanabi Taikai", a fireworks show held in August, is famous for its dynamic fireworks of a wide variety, attracting many tourists from all over the country.
Kashiwazaki that faces the Sea of Japan has 15 beaches along its beautiful coast. In summertime, it turns into a marine resort visited by many people even from far away. Also with many areas offering exquisite scenery, the pleasure boat cruise that takes passengers on a tour to the coastal line known as Fukuura Hakkei featuring rock reefs, caves, and bold cliffs is very popular among tourists.
