Located on the Sea of Japan side of the Echigo Plain, Mt. Yahiko is characteristic of its lofty appearance that seems to emerge from the coast. Surrounded by the ocean and the plain, this magnificent and beautiful mountain can be seen from everywhere. There are many routes you can choose from to go to the top of the mountain: hiking trail, Yahikoyama Ropeway, and Yahikoyama Skyline (sightseeing road). From its peak that offers a sweeping view of the Sea of Japan, you can also watch the sun set over the Sado Island.
The Yahiko Shrine at the eastern base of the mountain is called Echigo Ichinomiya (the greatest shrine in the Echigo region). As a matter of fact, all of Mt. Yahiko is considered holy and has been revered by the people since the old days. On the well-wooded grounds of this prestigious shrine also mentioned in the Manyoshu (anthology of poems written in the late 7th to late 8th centuries), a solemn atmosphere surrounds the many buildings found there such as the Haiden (prayer hall), Homotsuden (treasure hall), and Maiden (ceremonial dance hall).
Visitors can stay overnight in the Yahiko Village where lodging facilities are available and enjoy the three types of hot springs as well.
