The Ohara Museum of Art is a private museum where western art is mainly featured. It was built in 1930 by Magozaburo Ohara, an entrepreneur who lived in the city of Kurashiki. Including such famous works such as El Greco's Annunciation and Monet's Water Lilies, many works that represent western art from Barbizonism to Impressionism are housed. You will also find a number of masterpieces significant to Japan's modern art history since the Meiji era (since 1868) including Ryusei Kishida's Little Girl Dancing. Furthermore, such works by the masters of modern craft products as well as ancient Chinese, Egyptian, and Oriental artworks indeed continue attracting the art lovers. In addition to these collections, the Collection Theme Exhibition is being well received. This is an exhibition held twice a year in spring and summer at Yurinso, the second home of the Ohara family. Other interesting events also conducted are art lectures and gallery concerts.
