The city of Yubari is situated somewhat southwest of Hokkaido's center, and the Yubari River flows on its south side. After coal was discovered here in 1888, it grew as one of several coal mining towns in Japan, but all 24 coal mines closed by 1991 when oil replaced coal as the country's primary energy resource. Yubari is renowned for its Yubari melons, a local specialty that symbolizes summer in Hokkaido. The melons are grown on the vast land that Hokkaido is blessed with. Their juicy orange flesh (insides) is extremely tender, and they are full of carotene, making them a healthy meal. Melon Castle conducts research and development, produces and sells Yubari melons, and you can take a tour to see how they make melon brandy and liqueur. Next door is Casablanca, a Yubari souvenir center offering samples of melon brandy and liqueur where you can purchase Yubari specialties.
