Yunokawa Hot Spring located quite close to the Tsugaru Straits near the city of Hakodate is a historic hot spring resort visited for therapeutic bathing by the domain lord of Matsumae in the Edo period as well as injured soldiers during the Boshin War (civil war). The water of the Yunokawa Hot Spring is colorless and odorless; it is characteristic of its soft, gentle feel. Since it helps keep your body warm, it is said to work for poor blood circulation. Approximately 30 Japanese-style inns and hotels are in the area. A free foot bath that is opened all day and all night is found near the Hakodate Tramway's Yunokawa Onsen Station.
Hakodate, a city that boasts one of Hokkaido's most abundant fish hauls, offers a wide variety of seafood that can be savored all year long. During the period from summer to early winter, you can bathe in the hot spring and gaze at the seasonal sight of Hakodate in the distance, i.e., the lights on the squid-fishing boats. Then, the next morning, very fresh "Asa Ika" (literally, "morning squid") can be enjoyed for breakfast.
Access to this hot spring resort which serves as a sightseeing base of the city is convenient since it is only a five-minute drive from Hakodate Airport.
