Doto-Tokachi/Hidaka
East Hokkaido is a broad area that includes the cities of Abashiri and Nemuro, as well as the town of Erimo. Nature exists in its pristine, original state here. There are several World Heritage sites in the central area of East Hokkaido. The Shiretoko Peninsula is Japan's last frontier area. Red-crowned cranes inhabit the Kushiro Wetlands, the largest marshes in Japan, and beautiful caldera lakes can be found around Akan National Park.
Abashiri faces the Sea of Okhotsk, which is famous for its drift ice and clionidae ("sea angels"). You can see the wonderful world of drift ice by riding on an ice breaker plowing through the ice. On the coast of the Sea of Okhotsk is Lake Saroma, the biggest in Hokkaido and the third-largest in Japan.
Tokachi, nestled among the magnificent Hidaka Mountains and the Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group, is known as the leading area in Japan for producing wheat, azuki beans and butter. At Tokachigawa Hot Spring, on the banks of the Tokachi River, you can enjoy "moor hot spring water," which includes organic qualities from rare plants.
Many race horses have been produced by the ranches in Hidaka, where horse racing fans flock to visit.
