Lake Akan, part of Akan National Park, is located near the city of Kushiro in eastern Hokkaido. It has a surface area of 13.28 k�u, a circumference of 30 km and a maximum depth of 45 meters. Towering on its eastern shore is the caldera from Mt. Oakan's eruption. The lake contains four islands (Oshima, Kojima, Churui and Yaitai), and is famous for marimo (moss balls), a protected species that grows in the lake. Visitors can enjoy canoeing, rafting and fishing for rainbow trout, ito and char during the summer. In winter there is ice fishing for smelt through holes in the frozen lake surface, iceskating, snowmobiles and more. There is also a 12 km, 85-minute roundtrip pleasure cruise from the Lake Akan viewpoint to the Marimo Exhibition Tourist Center, on which participants can take in the beauty of nature in all four seasons.
