Lake Kussharo Lake Kussharo

Lake Kussharo is located in Akan National Park and is the second largest lake in Hokkaido behind Lake Saroma. It has a circumference of 57 km, an area of 79.3 ku and a maximum depth of 117.5 meters, making it the largest caldera lake in Japan. Rising from the center of the lake is Nakashima, the largest island in a fresh water lake in Japan with a circumference of 12 km and an area of 5.7 ku. The lake's name comes from Kuccharo, which in the Ainu language means the place where the lake becomes a river and flows out. You can try camping, yachting and sports such as windsurfing, as well as fishing and hot spring bathing at popular resorts. People come visit in the winter to enjoy watching the 400 to 500 swans that gather every year at the one part of the otherwise frozen-over lake that is melted by geothermal heat.
