The city of Kushiro, located in southeastern Hokkaido and the main city of the prefecture's east, has grown against the backdrop of the vast and great Pacific Ocean and the magnificent Kushiro Wetlands. The picturesque local scenery includes Kushiro Wetlands National Park, the first designated wetlands listed in Japan under the Ramsar Convention; Nusamai Bridge, one of the three Daimyo (meaning feudal lord) Bridges in Hokkaido spanning the mouth of the Kushiro River; and Red-Crowned Crane Nature Park, where visitors can view this protected species called The Gods of the Wetlands. There have been several monuments built to singers such as Takuboku Ishikawa. The area is popular as a place where the city and nature come together, and where you can enjoy outdoor activities like canoeing and horse riding in the vastness of nature.
