Chiba
Chiba Prefecture, a peninsula jutting out into the Pacific Ocean, can be found to the east of Tokyo. The Tokyo Bay is on its western side while the Pacific Ocean is on its southeastern side. It is a prefecture with almost no hills and the shape of the land on the northern side is made up of a lowland situated along the sea coast and rivers as well as a plateau on the loamy layer of the Kanto region created by volcanic ash deposits. There are a number of mountains turned into tourist spots in the hilly terrain on the southern side such as Mt. Kano and Mt. Nokogiri. Because three of its sides are surrounded by the ocean, Chiba's warm, marine type climate gives the prefecture its characteristic mild winters and cool summers. Especially, the temperature in the Minamiboso coast does not get so cold during wintertime thanks to the warm currents. After World War II, coastal reclamation was conducted on the Tokyo Bay and the Keiyo industrial area was born while heavy and chemical industry was developed. Chiba's habitable area is wide; it faces Tokyo while also being a part of the Greater Tokyo area. For such reasons, it has also been valued for long as a bedroom suburb of Tokyo with the progress of housing development. With Narita Airport (Tokyo International Airport) serving as a major air gateway of Japan as well as Tokyo Disney Resort, many people visit this prefecture from home and abroad regardless of seasons. Indeed, this is a prefecture that has shown a lot of progress.
