Lake Nozori is a highland lake located on the prefectural border between Gunma, Nagano, and Niigata, surrounded by mountains that reach an altitude of 2,000 meters.
Originally a wetland that was the site of Nozori Pond, the current lake was created in 1956 when Nozori Dam was constructed to produce electric power.
The shores of the lake are home to over 300 species of alpine flora. In particular, the huge clusters of yellow nozorikisuge flowers that bloom in the summer are spectacular.
A variety of hiking trails are available, including a relatively flat course around the lake and a more difficult course through the surrounding mountains. A lodge and campground are located on the north shore of the lake, and are open from June through October.
From spring through autumn, the areas around the campgrounds bustle with visitors enjoying fishing, hiking, bird watching, and other activities. The road from the foot of the mountains to Lake Nozori is closed during the winter, when the area is covered with 3 meters of snow.
