Tomioka/Annaka
The Tomioka/Annaka area is located in the western region of Gunma Prefecture, on the southern border of Takasaki City.
The Tomioka Silk Mill, Japan's first government-operated silk factory, was built in Tomioka in 1872, and it is said that the area is the birthplace of modern industry in Japan. Buildings, etc., that remain from that time tell the story of the flourishing of those former days.
During the Edo Period, Annaka flourished as a castle town of the Annaka Domain, and as a post station on the Nakasendo highway. In addition to the remains of checkpoints, military headquarters, and other historical sites, Annaka is surrounded by abundant nature, including the Usui River and its tributaries, lakes, and waterfalls. In particular, the Akima Plum Grove located in the hilly northern area of Annaka City is well known for growing some of the best plums in the Kanto region, and bustles each year with visitors who come to see the blossoms.
