Yamashita Park is a waterfront park that represents Yokohama. It is indeed filled with the history of the Yokohama Bay.
It was built on top of the mass of rubble from the Great Kanto Earthquake that struck in 1923 and opened as a park in 1930. Since then, it was used as the venue for the Recovery Exposition and was taken over by the American military after the war before turning into the park we see today.
Yamashita Park stretches approximately 1 kilometer along the Yokohama Port from the eastern side of Osan Bridge to Yamashita Wharf. In the park, you will find many statues and monuments such as the Girl with Red Shoes Statue and Water Guardian Statue while in its background stands the Yokohama Marine Tower.
Additionally, Hikawamaru which lived its life as a luxury liner in the 1930s is moored at the pier on the side of Yamashita Wharf and is now considered as the symbol of this park. The liner is designed in an authentic art decor style and you can see the elaborate designs in its interior, furniture, and lights.
Also close to Yokohama Chinatown and Motomachi, Yamashita Park indeed is a place loved by many people including local residents and tourists.
