Chichibu / Nagatoro
Chichibu is situated in the northwestern part of Saitama Prefecture surrounded by isolated mountains. It is also the headstream of the Arakawa River. Boasting a 300 year history, Chichibu is well known for the Chichibu 34 Kannon Sanctuary and the Chichibu-yomatsuri Night Festival that is held in December every year.
This area was inhabited by people from an early time; one can see descriptions about Chichibu in "Shoku Nihongi," a history book written in the 8th century. Due to this, a number of historic sites still remain.
If you visit Nagatoro Gorge, where numerous strange shaped rocks create a diverse scenery, you can enjoy a river trip known as "Nagatoro Rhine Kudari".
There are also other sightseeing spots such as hot springs and farms where you can pick and taste fresh strawberries and grapes directly from the garden. This is the area where you can fully enjoy nature both leisurely and actively.
