Marunouchi, Yurakucho
Marunouchi, the area located between Tokyo Station and Kokyo Gaien (outer garden of the Imperial Palace), is being developed as one of Japan's foremost business districts.
In the Edo period, this area was surrounded by the double moat "Uchibori" (inner moat) and "Sotobori" (outer moat) of Edo Castle, and bristling with mansions of Daimyo (feudal lords). Marunouchi became a military installation after the coming of the Meiji Era and was later sold to the private sector and developed. As Tokyo Station was constructed and road improvement progressed, this area grew into a commercial center.
In recent years, large scale redevelopment has been undertaken, new complex buildings comprising of commercial facilities, hotels, and offices are opening continually.
Represented by the Marunouchi Building and Shin-Marunouchi Building, centerpieces of the Marunouchi district; buildings of major banks and large corporations stand side by side, as Marunouchi now features as one of the centers of Japanese finance and economy.
