The Museum of Maritime Science is a marine/nautical culture museum which opened in 1974 as the first building to be constructed in the Odaiba area.
Its ship-shaped exterior is made in the motif of Queen Elizabeth II, a luxury liner. The part representing the funnel and mast actually serves as an observatory. In the museum, you will find descriptions of the structure and history of ships as well as exhibits including engines and various types of equipments. The top floor is a space where wheelhouse-related exhibitions are conducted and the signal station of the Japan Coast Guard is located in the main building where you can observe what the staff are doing through a glass window. Additionally, popular, participation-type attractions such as ship handling simulation are offered.
Displayed outside are the "Soya," the first observation boat to the South Pole, and the "Yoteimaru," a boat used as a ferry between Hokkaido and Aomori. Indeed, visiting this museum will allow you an encounter with Japan's nautical culture.
