Kobe Maritime Museum opened in April 1987 to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the opening of Kobe Port.
It is one of the world's largest maritime museums, with its themes of the ocean, ship, and port.
The building, which features white frames that represent ship mast and waves, is impressive when viewed together with the green Mt. Rokko and the red Kobe Port Tower.
During night time, the building is lit up blue. For this reason, it has become a Kobe Port landmark.
Outside the museum, visitors can see Yamato One, a superconductivity electromagnetic-powered ship, as well as ships and boats, both old and new, from the East and the West. Another attraction is the multiple video screen shows and a 360-degree state-of-the-art video system, both of which are powerful.
In May 2006, the Kawasaki World, which introduces Kawasaki Heavy Industry's technologies and history in the fields of land, sea, and air/space opened at a land adjacent to the museum.
