Port of Kobe Earthquake Memorial Park faces the Meriken Harbor, the eastern end of Kobe Port Meriken Park. It is designed to pass down memories of disasters caused by the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake which struck the area on January 17, 1995.
The earthquake caused a heavy damage to the Meriken Park.
The collapsed pier and tilted street lamps are preserved as they are at the time of aftermath of the earthquake, so that visitors can witness the intensity of the tremor.
Nearby the park is an exhibition space which displays photo panels of the earthquake and other materials related to the earthquake damages.
Visitors are also introduced to the restoration and reconstruction processes in which many individuals from both in and out of Japan cooperated as one.
