Beppu Jigoku Meguri is a tourist route that features the eight most unique hot springs of the Beppu Hot Spring, one of the greatest hot spring resorts in the country.
What make each of these eight hot springs unique are their respective colors and steam. Because these factors resemble a scene out from hell, this name was given to this route ("jigoku" means hell).
The Jigoku Meguri course includes the following: Umi Jigoku (bluish water; "umi" means ocean), Oniishi Bozu Jigoku (gray thermal mud at boiling temperature), Yama Jigoku (steam rising from the "yama," or mountain), Kamado Jigoku (various ponds filled with hot spring water; "kamado" means furnace), Oniyama Jigoku (also called Wani Jigoku because of the 100 or so "wani," or crocodiles, bred there), Shiraike Jigoku (white water), Chi-no-Ike Jigoku (reddish water; "chi" means blood), and Tatsumaki Jigoku (geyser; "tatsumaki" means tornado).
Although visitors cannot bathe in any of the Jigoku springs, they are sure to enjoy their extraordinary appearances that are certainly worth seeing.
Foot baths are offered at some of the Jigoku springs while others breed and exhibit animals and plants by utilizing the heat from the springs. Therefore, you will definitely enjoy the variety of hot springs that the Jigoku Meguri features.
