Tohoku
A northern region of Honshu, Tohoku is made up of 6 prefectures: Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, Yamagata, and Fukushima.
It is a long prefecture extending from the north to the south with is western side facing the Sea of Japan while the Pacific Ocean is on its eastern side. The Ou Mountain Range stretches vertically in the central part of this region.
Its climate differs on the Sea of Japan side and the Pacific Ocean side. Nevertheless, the region's general climatic characteristic is that there is a great temperature difference between summers and winters in most of its areas.
Due to the foehn phenomenon, the Sea of Japan side in summertime is frequently blessed with fine weather and can get very hot while heavy snowfall occurs during the winter.
As for the summers on the Pacific Ocean side, a cold blast called the Yamase blows during this time of year which may harm agricultural crops. However, the amount of snowfall is not so high in wintertime, the air is dry, and sunny days can often be enjoyed.
In terms of sightseeing, there is the Shirakami Mountain Range, a World Heritage site, as well as Matsushima, one of the Three Views of Japan. Additionally, autumn brings the beautiful foliage season while nature can be appreciated through activities such as skiing.
This is also a region with many famous hot springs and festivals. Moreover, traveling to each of its prefectures is convenient, thanks to the Shinkansen (bullet train) that runs from Tokyo.
