Northern Hokkaido refers to the inland area and the northern portion of the island. The city of Wakkanai is the northnermost point in Japan, and Asahikawa has in recent years become a popular tourist destination.

Nature abounds in the inland city of Asahikawa, the second-largest in Hokkaido. Popular spots include the exciting Soun Valley and the Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group, where you can enjoy trekking. In addition, Asahiyama Zoo has gained quite a bit of notice in Japan for its uniquely designed animal exhibits. Further inland and to the south of Asahikawa is Furano, which is surrounded by fields of beautiful lavender blanketed in a sea of purple.

The city of Wakkanai, situated on the Soya Cape, Japan's northernmost area, is known for holding Japan's largest dog sled race. West of the city is Rebun Island, also known as "Flower Island," and famous Rishiri Island, on which stands Rishiri Fuji.
