The Eto's (Oriental zodiac) root can be found in China from where it was brought over to Japan.
It symbolized the years, months, hours, and directions by combining 10 elements and 12 animals.
In modern-day Japan, mainly the twelve signs of the Oriental Zodiac are called Eto to symbolize the years.
The Eto changes when the new year begins. 2008 is the "year of the rat" and 2009 will be the "year of the ox."
You can find out how old a person is by asking what his/her "Eto" is.
The twelve signs of the Oriental Zodiac: rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep (ram or goat), monkey, rooster, dog, and boar.
